What's new from the EuroDISH project?

 

This second EuroDISH newsletter comes after the 3rd EuroDISH plenary meeting, 10-11 March, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where all the project partners came together to share the developments and discuss the upcoming activities of the project.

Top level representatives are being interviewed by the coordination team of EuroDISH: Prof. Pieter van 't Veer, Krijn Poppe and Karin Zimmermann.

The interviews will discuss the draft design of the research infrastructures for food and health and identify critical factors influencing support and financial commitment. This aims to enhance the feasibility of the designs of the research infrastructures. The interviewees are chosen based on the inclusion of:

  1. Top level general public bodies such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Commission (DG Health and Consumers), and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
  2. Regional health systems and science bodies of preferably four different European regions, because geographical perspective is important.
  3. Top level industry representatives including Unilever, Nestlé and Food and Drink Europe.

The outcomes will be described in a report. These will feed into the next phase design of governance structures, together with the results of the desk study and the results on the synthesis of needs for integration of existing and new hard and soft infrastructures. In the end this information will contribute to the design of the roadmap of successful EU-wide research infrastructures for the food and health research area.


What are research infrastructures?

To support research collaborations, EU-wide research infrastructures are essential. Research infrastructures are facilities, resources or services which support the scientific community to conduct top-level research. The EuroDISH project is assessing current food and health research infrastructures in Europe and will make recommendations on needs and best-practice.

Stakeholder workshop - Outlining the European research infrastructures for the food and health domain                                                                             In the second phase of the EuroDISH project (synthesis and governance of new research infrastructures), this workshop will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss the integrated findings of EuroDISH in order to refine the proposed research infrastructures and to identify arising gaps, needs and governance issues. It will take place on 19-20 May 2014 in Brussels, Belgium.

Following the workshop a report will be produced to outline the proposed and refined research infrastructures including the identified opportunities and governance issues, an overview of incentive mechanisms, shared values and expected impact. This will serve as a basis for the next phase of the project (developing the conceptual design of research infrastructures with a roadmap for implementation).

Case study: Integrating platforms on food consumption and food composition
To ensure its recommendations are actionable, EuroDISH will perform two case studies on research infrastructures. The first case study focuses on the integration of two major existing platforms on food consumption and food composition (nutrient and other food components), relevant to enhancing comparable dietary assessment and monitoring throughout Europe. 2nd International Conference on Research Infrastructures (ICRI 2014)     

On request of the European Commission, the coordinators Prof P. van’ t Veer and Karin Zimmermann of the EuroDISH project attended the 2nd International Conference on Research Infrastructures (ICRI 2014), 2-4 April 2014 in Athens, Greece. The conference provided a forum for discussion and advancement of cooperation on research infrastructures of global relevance. The discussions were focused around:

  • Highlighting the essential role of global research infrastructures in addressing the grand challenges at all scales: national, regional, European and global.
  • Reflecting on the needs, development and operation of global research infrastructures.
  • Presenting the main characteristics of global research infrastructures and identifying the challenges and drivers for collaboration at international level.

EuroDISH organised a Food Domain RI meeting on the 4rd of April 9:30am-11:00pm. This aimed to stimulate ideas about future possibilities, and to establish a discussion platform to elaborate on the food research infrastructure domain in the near future.
